In Persia, trade powered the economy. Spices and a variety of gems traveled through the empire every day. Because of the great wealth found in trade, the government made sure to build and maintain roads, and fund sea trade journals. Finally, King Darius managed to build a canal connecting the Nile River to the Red Sea, shortening the travel times dramatically. (The Persian Empire) The move was wildly popular.
